Okay, here's the thing. My income tax refund should be here in the next week or so, and I'm wondering whether I should buy a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

I've been an Xbox 360 player since it came out, and it has some great games; Gears of War, Modern Warfare 2 (which I already own a copy of), Halo, etc.

While the PS3 has a built in Blu-Ray player, free online gaming, and some amazing exclusives; Resistance, Killzone, God of War, etc.

At this moment I'm leaning towards the PS3 because of the above mentioned games, and the fact that I don't have an internet connection good enough for online gaming. Please let me know your thoughts.

Also, I already own a pair of Turtle Beach X1's for the 360...if that means anything. hmm

Where's "none of the above"?

Just get a decent PC and hook it up to your TV if you must...

The thing is, I'm a big First Person Shooter player, and I absolutely suck at them on PC.  I've tried to go the PC route at one point, but it just didn't work for me.

So do I, but you'd have to hold me at gunpoint to play an FPS with a joypad... *shudder*

Personally I never understood joypad FPS users. However your question is specifically concerning console purchasing so I will stick to advisement on that.

If it were last year, I would probably recommend waiting for this year, but now it's this year.

So far the Nintendo Wii has proved most promising, however in the next few years the PS3 will easily become the raining champ with it's lowering price and built in blue-ray player. Though the latest versions no longer have backward compatibility with PS2 games (which is a fucked up 'upgrade' if you ask anyone except for SONY's business department... even marketing was like "WTF?!"). The PS3 has more power than all its competitors and the most promise in the long run. The main reason the Wii reigned supreme was because of it's fantastic game selection and new unique controller designs. This also allowed non-gamers to enter the fold as it became increasingly simple for newbies (not to be confused with N00bz... which sux0rz pwndz). I admit that the Wii is a fantastic console with many great games, including the continued Zelda franchise. Also, it is the cheapest by far compared to the competition. In addition, because of its more 'open-market' approach by supporting indie gamers to develop games for the Wii, it should have more games supported by it than any other console. In addition, it's also backwards compatible with Gamecube games AND controllers, not to mention a massive online archive of old classics from BOTH Nintendo AND SEGA. I must say if you are the morally righteous gamer, Nintendo is the way to go, as it's honor is far greater than all the competitors.

So if your not the type to be easily impressed by fancy graphics and over the top features; the Wii clearly the way to go. It's interface is the most user-friendly I've seen of the 3 consoles, and quite satisfying to use on it's own. In addition, one cannot deny the fact that it is incredibly petite for a NextGen Console, while still having a decent amount of power (albeit the weakest of the 3 consoles).

However if it were me, PS3. If your looking too the future of gaming and to have a console which will last into the 'PS4' generation of consoles (as well as having HD AND 3D gaming and media support) then the PS3 is absolutely the way to go. The newer PS3 Slim consoles do have a smaller footprint than the XBox 360, thus making the XBox 360 the heavyweight console. The PS3 Slim does this while still being the most powerful of the three. PS3 games are vivid and stunning, and the console will also soon see a flood of additional titles under it's belt as it becomes an acceptable financial option. Though still the least cost effective in the short run, its the biggest investment of all the consoles by far. The only major downfall of the PS3 is the lack of backward compatibility options. However this is an attempt to push into the future decade, so in a couple of years it won't matter as much.

I would only argue for the XBox 360 for those interested in Microsoft's buy-outs of great titles (such like you've mentioned). GTA4 for example is best on the XBox 360 as Microsoft bought exclusive rights to the Downloadable Content expansion packs for the game, that way no other medium may have the best version of the game. (even PC users aren't permitted to have the Downloadable Content, even though the game runs on MICROSOFT Windows Operating Systems). Plus, the XBox has a large (yet young) gaming community thanks to its massive kick off with the Halo franchise. I've always felt that it's a competition between the Wii and PS3, while the XBox feels like too much Packaging and not enough Product, and that's even considering its large footprint. Mind you, I am more against the way Microsoft does business through the XBox, so if that's not an issue, than its clearly a middle of the road console, I don't see much for its future until Microsoft makes some improvements... but that costs too much for its reward according to their Business Directive.

Note: I don't own any of these, but I'm going into the industry so I do extensive research into it.

Funny you should mention the GTA4 DLC - three days ago I got Rockstar's newsletter that said "Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Libery City – Coming Spring 2010 for PlayStation 3 and PC." Grin

The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning toward PS3.  I just miss being able to play great RPGs and action games such as God of War.  Those are two genres that the Xbox 360 is seriously lacking, and it seems to me that more certain franchises, like Halo, work with Microsoft they adopt their money-making mentality.  :Screw how our consumers feel about a game!  As long as it makes us lots of money it's all good!"

Of two I'd go PS3. Theres more to gripe about but at least they have a decent number of worthwhile exclusive titles. Especially with things like Project Trico and the Indigo Prophecy Sequel coming up.
