I am a self proclaim metal guy, listening to Metallica way too much, throwing in some Iron Maiden, Rush to mix it up, PsychoStick when I wanna laugh...and so on. So what do I like the most?

I want to know want songs have all the right parts to transcend time. Songs of power, making people laugh and cry, putting a smile on faces when they are feeling down. The song you would play on the school bus during high school and the entire bus would sing along, teachers included.

One of such songs for me is American Pie. I just listened to it for the first time in quite a while, and nearly cried. Of all the music I love, this has something special that most music just cannot seem to tap into. This is one of the songs when as a family when we were driving, if it came on, all talk ended and the radio got turned up, no questions asked. So tell me, forty years from now, what songs will you turn up the radio for, heralding the good times past? What song shears off the years, and returns the joy of living?

I am a metalhead meself.  About 90% of the music I listen to is metal, so most of my songs that meet the "timeless" criteria will be from this genre, but I also have a few songs that I absolutely love that most people would never think I'd like.  So, I'll list them first.

Non-Metal:
Elton John - Sad Songs (Say So Much)
Elton John - I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues
Elton John - Saturday Night's ALright For Fighting
Elton John - Funeral for A Friend/Love Lies Bleedin
John Mellencamp - Small Town
Queen - Radio Ga Ga
Queen - Under Pressure

METAL!!!
Iced Earth - Question of Heaven
Iced Earth - Melancholy (Holy Martyr)
Avantasia - The Scarecrow
Blind Guardian - Ans Then There Was Silence
Demons & Wizards - FIddler on the Green
Ayreon - Day 16: Loser
Evergrey - Harmless Wishes

Ethon John has some very good music, of which Levon is wonderful. I have no idea as to why, but so it seems to be. Demons and Wizards have the heart wrenching Wicked Witch. If you are a Dark Tower fan, this song holds special power...Poor Susan. In the Metal part of the brain, The Day That Never Comes is powerful, especially when paired with the music video.

I completely agree that "Wicked Witch" is a great song.  I can post more of my choices, but it'll take a while to put the list together.  I can't believe I forgot about Trans-Siberian Orchestra!

My vote goes to "Baba O'Riley" by The Who. It just seems to be one of those songs that everyone can wake up to regardless of generation.
